I will be honest with you and say that I wish I got more questions about resin art because I sound silly talking to myself about the process when I'm making art by myself in my garage. So here we are!
Below is a list of products you will need to get started with resin art.
PPE
You NEED personal protective equipment! Do not attempt to play with resin until you have gloves and a respirator. Resin is generally safe until you heat it up and the fumes could potentially get into your lungs. Also, you do not want resin on your skin because it's a chemical. Wear gloves. You should also wear an apron to protect your clothes because once resin gets on your clothes, it will never come out. Now on to the fun part...
Art Resin
There are many resin materials on the market. I've only tried three epoxy resins and I list them in preferential order below:
- NAKED FUSION-The Artist's Resin
- I LOVE this resin because it is the cheapest I've found on the market that offers great quality. The resin has a shorter working time (35-45 minutes), so you have to move fast when using the resin. It handles heat well, when wet and dry. It also leaves the least amount of dimples and dents from dust once the resin has dried.
- ArtResin
- ArtResin is a premier resin on the market. It is expensive compared to other resins on the market because it truly offers the best quality. It has a fruity oder which is nice. It also has great heat resistance, which is a plus if you're making coasters. The working time is about 45 minutes which is the industry average.
- Stone Coat Countertops - Art Coat
- Stone Coat Countertops Art Coat resin has the best glass finish I've every felt. I love the glossy look it leaves on resin art. The resin has an amazingly long woking time up to 1 hr 30 min. It is expensive, especially for a gallon kit. Follow Artist Til Death on Youtube for a 10% discount code. Disclaimer: I will not buy this resin in the near future because it is impossible for me to form cells, an aesthetic I love to see in my resin art. Also, the smallest piece of dust looks like a giant crater once the resin has dried.
Pigments
I can talk about powders and pastes all day long with you! I list the brands that I like to buy from below; however, I recommend that you find mica powders on Amazon for cheap to start because you may want to experiment with colors if you're a beginner resin artist. Feel free to message me if you want to know the exact colors I use in my resin art.
- Art Pro Pigments Brilliant Mica Powder great price, great quality. These were the first pigments I bought as a resin artist and I still use them today in most of my art.
- Aga Art Studio - all of Agnes' pigments are amazing for resin art. I would suggest that you start with her gold pigments.
- Artist Til Death - I've only tried the Just Resin pigment pastes - white, red and silver - and the colors do well in my artwork.
Heat Gun/Torch
Bubbles will form in your resin. It's inevitable, but it is easy to solve for once you see bubbles in your resin art. I suggest you use a torch to pop bubbles and a heat gun to move the colors around your resin art piece. A torch will not move your colors around the same way a heat gun will.

Silicone Mold
Depending on what you want to create, you may need a silicone mold to start. For example if you want to make resin coasters, you may want to try a silicone mold for resin art coasters. Silicone molds come in different shapes and sizes and you can find some decently priced molds on Amazon. However, I like to search Etsy for silicone molds and I typically don't mind spending a few extra bucks for a good mold on Etsy.
Garbage Bags
Please, please protect the surfaces you're woking on. Resin rarely comes off any surface once it has dried. It is my suggestion that you use & recycle garbage bags as often as you can to protect the table from resin.
Cardboard Boxes
You must cover your artwork once you've finished your work. Resin is sticky and any dust particle or hair floating around in your environment will find its way to your sticky art. Once your work is dry, there is nothing more unattractive than dents and dimples in dried resin due to the dust that has settled on top of your art. Avoid this by covering your art. Feel free to get creative if you don't have cardboard boxes available. When I first started working with resin, I would tuck my resin coasters in drawers and cabinets when I didn't have enough boxes to use.
Extra tip: If your resin cures with dimples & dents, you must sandpaper your art to remove the imperfection before pouring another layer of resin over the entire art piece. Try to avoid this accident altogether because resin is not cheap. Also, time is money if you intend on selling your resin artwork. You will need to wait 24-48 hrs for each new layer of resin poured before touching your art and preparing it for a sale.
